Linking Verbs

Linking verbs express a state or condition rather than an
13
1
action. They are called linking verbs because they link the
13
1
subject to a complement which identifies or describes the
13
1
subject. This subject complement may be a noun, pronoun,
13
1
or adjective. Common linking verbs include the following:
13
1
appear, be, become, feel, grow, look, remain, seem, smell,
13
1
sound, stay, taste.

Some linking verbs can also be used as action verbs, which
13
1
can be modified by adverbs. A good way to determine
13
1
whether the verb is functioning as a linking verb or action
13
1
verb is to substitute the appropriate forms of
13
0
is
8
0
and
13
0
seem
8
0
for
13
1
the verb. If the sentence still makes sense and has not
13
1
changed its meaning, then the verb is a linking verb.
